Galaxy motions and gravitational lensing probe mass distributions beyond what visible matter alone explains. The physical nature of dark matter remains an open question.
Ask which observation a claim explains and which alternatives are tested.
The first distinction in dark-matter research is between evidence about gravitational behaviour and the microscopic identity of matter. Galaxy motions, clusters and lensing probe mass distributions through different observations. Combining those routes matters; one dramatic image does not solve the whole question. If a graph compares expected and observed curves, check the visible-matter distribution and physical assumptions used to calculate the expectation. An unresolved physical identity does not mean that gravitational observations are absent. Conversely, a successful gravitational fit does not automatically establish a laboratory detection of a particular particle.
In a simple motion example, v² = GM/r relates speed to enclosed mass under suitable spherical, circular-orbit assumptions. Real galaxies require more careful treatment of disc geometry, line-of-sight motion and multiple components. Do not present a teaching calculation as an analysis already applied to every galaxy. Compare alternatives on the same dataset and uncertainty convention rather than matching one explanation’s strongest example against another’s weakest. Label measured quantities, model parameters and theoretical interpretation separately. Stating what a result does not exclude also makes the investigation’s scope visible instead of allowing a visually convincing fit to imply a unique physical answer.
Follow this question into the cosmology dossier and primary-literature search to build a bounded evidence comparison. Ask, for example, whether two methods probe the same mass region or different scales. Add dates, units, sample selection and uncertainty to a table. No new particle discovery, verified simulation or final theory is announced here. A source-check date records editorial checking of linked material, not independent specialist endorsement. Before an advanced investigation, write down an observation that could weaken the interpretation you favour. This turns an open question into a testable, source-linked research route rather than an unlimited list of assertions.
