Al-Qanun al-Masudi brings together astronomy from several language traditions.
Record coordinates and units.
Al-Biruni’s connections between astronomy, mathematics, time and Earth measurement do not fit neatly into one modern disciplinary heading. This record is grounded in the institutional description of the British Library’s Or 1997 copy of Al-Qanun al-Masudi. That description presents a work revisiting earlier astronomy and incorporating contributions from Arabic, Persian and Sanskrit sources. It does not mean that this platform has newly translated the entire text. Relating an attributed contribution to a particular section, definition or calculation is a more informative historical method than arranging scholars in a general ranking of superiority.
Comparing a historical coordinate with the modern sky requires more than noticing similar numbers. Investigate the reference direction, angle unit, time convention and epoch. The same term can carry different technical implications across sections. Understand the work’s own method before inserting a modern equation retrospectively and declaring that the author necessarily used it. Geometrical interpretation of a diagram and philological reading of a text are distinct kinds of expertise. When reproducing your own calculation, label it as a present-day investigation of the described relation, not as a newly recovered historical observation.
Follow this person record into the manuscript and select a bounded topic from the catalogue’s contents. Record its location, source image and measurement question in the notebook. Harmonise units before making a numerical comparison while preserving original and converted values separately. Do not confuse approximate lifetime dates with the surviving copy’s 1174 date. No newly named translator or independent peer-review report is claimed here. The aim is a more careful route into al-Biruni’s scientific heritage, with the supporting record, interpretive steps and unresolved reading questions visible to another visitor.
