SPACETRC / SCIENCE ATLAS

Start with one concept.
Follow the connections of science.

Sixty selected concepts across eight domains, connected to evidence, methods and open questions. Read a definition, follow a neighbouring concept and choose a source-linked study route.

8 domains60 conceptsTR / EN24.10.2026
SCIENCECONNECTED / 8.0
Conceptual domain arrangement; not physical orbits, influence scores or a measured network.

Investigate with the scope in view.

This atlas is a selected map for entering astronomy and space research. It does not claim that all sciences are complete or that every subject has specialist treatment. Foundation: definition and first evidence. Working: method and unit. Advanced: assumptions and limits. These labels describe content coverage, not a visitor’s certified proficiency.

Cosmology / Foundation

Redshift

A dimensionless comparison of observed and emitted wavelengths. In cosmology it traces stretching during expansion; inferring a distance additionally requires a model, rather than treating every shift as an ordinary velocity.

Open the question and concept connections

Which other features could test whether the line identification is correct?

Connections are editorial concept relationships, not claims of historical influence or measured correlation.

Cosmology / Foundation

Cosmic expansion

A framework describing changing large-scale distances with time. A gravitationally bound stellar system need not expand in the same way; observations, peculiar motions and modelling contributions must be distinguished.

Open the question and concept connections

How could a nearby object’s motion be distinguished from cosmic expansion?

Connections are editorial concept relationships, not claims of historical influence or measured correlation.

Cosmology / Foundation

Cosmic microwave background

Radiation used to investigate the early Universe. The measured sky also contains foregrounds; a temperature map must be read with its processing, component separation and instrumental response, rather than as an unqualified primordial photograph.

Open the question and concept connections

Which comparison could reveal residual foregrounds in a map?

Connections are editorial concept relationships, not claims of historical influence or measured correlation.

Cosmology / Advanced

Angular power spectrum

A summary of how sky variations are distributed across angular scales. It is not the map itself: masking, beam response and noise treatment can affect the scales represented in the result.

Open the question and concept connections

Which map-processing choices should remain consistent when comparing two spectra?

Connections are editorial concept relationships, not claims of historical influence or measured correlation.

Cosmology / Foundation

Dark matter

A matter component investigated through observations such as dynamics and gravitational lensing. Gravitational evidence does not mean that its particle identity has been directly detected; different evidence paths require separate tests.

Which alternative explanation has the gravitational model been compared against?

Connections are editorial concept relationships, not claims of historical influence or measured correlation.

Dark energy

A component used in models of accelerated cosmic expansion. The name does not identify a solved physical mechanism; its inferred amount depends on the combined data and selected cosmological framework.

Standard ruler

A physical scale established through a model or calibration is compared with an observed angular or distance relation. Uncertainty in the ruler’s calibration differs from uncertainty in the measured feature itself.

Which independent data could test the physical scale of the ruler?

Connections are editorial concept relationships, not claims of historical influence or measured correlation.

Cosmology / Working

Gravitational lensing

Gravity changes light paths and can alter source images and apparent shapes. Inferring a mass distribution requires considering source geometry, redshift and a lens model together, rather than reading mass directly from a distorted picture.

Open the question and concept connections

How could two lens models explaining the same image be distinguished?

Connections are editorial concept relationships, not claims of historical influence or measured correlation.

Galaxies / Foundation

Galaxy morphology

A classification of apparent galactic structure. Spiral, elliptical or irregular appearance does not uniquely determine a full history; filter choice, resolution and viewing direction can change what structure is visible.

Open the question and concept connections

Which observing condition might explain an apparent difference in shape?

Connections are editorial concept relationships, not claims of historical influence or measured correlation.

Galaxies / Working

Stellar-mass estimate

A galaxy’s stellar mass can be inferred from radiation and stellar-population models. It is not the same as apparent brightness: distance, dust and population assumptions contribute to the inferred value and its uncertainty.

Open the question and concept connections

Which model should be checked before comparing masses from two papers?

Connections are editorial concept relationships, not claims of historical influence or measured correlation.

Galaxies / Working

Star-formation rate

The mass converted into new stars per unit time under specified assumptions. Radiation tracers respond to different time scales; solar masses per year is a mass rate, not a direct count of stars.

Which recent time interval might the chosen tracer sample?

Connections are editorial concept relationships, not claims of historical influence or measured correlation.

Galaxies / Advanced

Quenching

The reduction of star-forming activity in a galaxy. Explanations involving gas supply, environment and feedback are compared; a red appearance alone does not establish which physical mechanism caused the change.

Which data could distinguish dust effects from an older stellar population?

Connections are editorial concept relationships, not claims of historical influence or measured correlation.

Galaxies / Working

Galaxy merger

The gravitational interaction and evolution of galaxies toward a combined system. Tails and distortions can be clues, but one image does not directly reveal the timing or complete dynamical history of an interaction.

Which motion measurement could strengthen an interpretation beyond the image?

Connections are editorial concept relationships, not claims of historical influence or measured correlation.

Galaxies / Advanced

Feedback

Energy from stars or active centres can alter surrounding gas and later formation processes. Seeing an energy source alone does not establish its impact: the response of the gas must also be tested.

Which independent observation could test the response of the gas?

Connections are editorial concept relationships, not claims of historical influence or measured correlation.

Sample selection

Defines which objects enter a study and which are missed. Easily detecting bright objects does not make them a random sample of the whole population; selection and exclusion rules must accompany the result.

How could undetected objects change the direction of the inference?

Connections are editorial concept relationships, not claims of historical influence or measured correlation.

Hydrostatic equilibrium

Describes the balance of gravity and pressure effects inside a star. Equilibrium does not mean that energy generation has stopped or that evolution is absent; these are related but different physical questions.

How do the inputs of an equilibrium model differ from an energy-source model?

Connections are editorial concept relationships, not claims of historical influence or measured correlation.

Nuclear fusion

Light nuclei can combine under suitable conditions and release energy. Stellar lifetime depends on fuel-use rate as well as fuel amount; stars of different initial conditions do not all follow one evolutionary path.

Why does more fuel not always imply a longer lifetime?

Connections are editorial concept relationships, not claims of historical influence or measured correlation.

Hertzsprung–Russell diagram

Compares stellar properties such as temperature and luminosity. Axis definitions vary; a diagram using apparent magnitude cannot automatically replace one using distance-corrected luminosity, and uncertainties or extinction can alter the pattern.

How would you verify the axes and distance solution of a diagram?

Connections are editorial concept relationships, not claims of historical influence or measured correlation.

Stars and their medium / Working

Luminosity

Total radiated energy per unit time, distinct from flux reaching an observer. Distance and attenuation matter. In an ideal blackbody approximation, surface area and temperature determine the relation rather than the displayed image brightness.

Open the question and concept connections

Could the same apparent flux correspond to different luminosities?

Connections are editorial concept relationships, not claims of historical influence or measured correlation.

Stars and their medium / Foundation

Interstellar medium

Gas and dust between stars within a galaxy. Different temperatures and ionisation states require different observing methods; a dark region in visible light is not necessarily empty and may conceal star-forming material.

Molecular-gas tracers

Molecular lines probe cloud conditions. Converting a tracer’s brightness into total mass involves excitation, temperature and optical-depth assumptions. One line is not a direct inventory of all material, and a non-detection requires a stated limit.

Stars and their medium / Working

Dust extinction

Dust reduces received light in a wavelength-dependent way. Attenuation and dust mass are not the same quantity; the source spectrum, band selection and line of sight affect how an observed dimming is interpreted.

Which measurement could distinguish extinction from intrinsically low luminosity?

Connections are editorial concept relationships, not claims of historical influence or measured correlation.

Spectroscopy

Separates light by wavelength to study lines and continuum. Interpreting composition, motion or temperature requires calibration and modelling; a strong line does not universally imply a high abundance of the corresponding element.

Open the question and concept connections

Which other physical condition could change the strength of the same line?

Connections are editorial concept relationships, not claims of historical influence or measured correlation.

Planetary systems / Foundation

Protoplanetary disk

Gas and dust around a young star provide a way to investigate planet formation. A disk image is not a completed planet inventory; the observing wavelength affects which material and structures become visible.

Which products could compare the structure of dust with the structure of gas?

Connections are editorial concept relationships, not claims of historical influence or measured correlation.

Dust growth

The growth of small solids into larger structures is a planet-formation question. Collisions, fragmentation and drift all matter; detecting dust does not establish that every stage of planetary growth has already occurred.

Planetesimal

Solid bodies considered as building blocks in planet formation. The mechanism taking material from dust to this scale needs testing; a visual analogy cannot substitute for a measured sequence of growth or a demonstrated conversion efficiency.

Disk rings and gaps

Brightness structures in disks provide clues to formation. A gap is not automatically a confirmed planet: alternative mechanisms, angular resolution and processing choices must be examined before assigning a planetary interpretation to the structure.

Planetary systems / Foundation

Planetary transit

An object crossing a star can reduce its total light. For an ideal uniform disc, depth is the squared radius ratio; real interpretation also involves stellar surface structure, geometry and light from other sources.

Planetary systems / Working

Radial velocity

A star’s line-of-sight motion can be investigated through Doppler shifts. A planetary interpretation must be tested against instrumental stability and stellar activity; a single shifted line does not establish a complete orbit.

Which time series could separate stellar activity from an orbital signal?

Connections are editorial concept relationships, not claims of historical influence or measured correlation.

Habitable zone

A distance framework for possible surface liquid water under specified atmospheric assumptions. Occupying this region is not a detection of life; atmosphere, stellar activity and planetary properties require additional evidence and modelling.

Exoplanet atmosphere

Small wavelength-dependent light changes are compared with atmosphere models. A molecular signature may be confused with stellar or instrumental effects; a proposed molecule alone does not establish a biological origin or a detection of life.

Coronal mass ejection

An eruption of plasma and magnetic structure from the Sun. A visually large event does not by itself determine effects at Earth; direction, speed and magnetic configuration also matter to its interpretation and forecast.

Solar wind

A flow of particles from the Sun, not ordinary atmospheric wind. Speed, density and magnetic field are different quantities; no single indicator captures every aspect of its interaction with planetary environments.

Photometry

Quantitative measurement of light in a selected band. Raw counts, physical flux and magnitude are different representations; background subtraction, zero point and uncertainty should be preserved when comparing observations or constructing a light curve.

Instrument response

Calibration

Relates measurements to defined references and uncertainty. It does not magically remove errors: standards, versions and corrections must be recorded. Reprocessing the same data with another calibration can change an inferred result.

Signal-to-noise ratio

The ratio of a defined signal to a chosen noise measure. Its spatial or spectral reference element matters; a high ratio alone does not establish a correct physical model or an error-free calibration.

Precision and accuracy

Repeatability and closeness to an appropriate reference are different properties. Highly consistent numbers can retain a systematic bias; an uncertainty budget should distinguish random variation from effects shared by many measurements or analyses.
