SPACETRC / RESEARCH DOSSIER
How do we know there is lunar water—and what remains unknown?
Separate a spectral signature, a polar impact experiment and the additional evidence needed to claim a usable resource.
FOUNDATIONS / EVIDENCE
Frame the water question first
Saying that the Moon contains water does not mean that a lake has been found or that ice occurs everywhere at the same abundance. Identifying a molecule, establishing its environment, estimating its inventory and demonstrating accessibility to a mission are different questions. A sunlit surface spectrum and an impact plume from a dark polar crater are not the same sample. This dossier reads each result together with its method and location. Start a research note with three columns: what was measured, which assumptions support its interpretation and where the result applies. This preserves the importance of a discovery without expanding its geographical scope beyond the evidence.

Why the spectrum matters
Features at particular infrared wavelengths carry information about molecular vibrations. Earlier observations around three micrometres had difficulty distinguishing contributions from water and hydroxyl. The SOFIA study examined a feature near six micrometres associated with molecular water, strengthening that interpretation for the sunlit Clavius region. The advance is not simply a brighter picture: it helps distinguish explanations that can produce similar signals. When inspecting a spectrum, check the wavelength unit, whether the vertical axis represents brightness or band depth, and how the background was removed. A coloured peak is the end of an analysis chain, not a substitute for documenting calibration, comparison spectra and the uncertainty of the fitted feature.

An impact plume is a different experiment
In the 2009 LCROSS experiment, an impact directed into Cabeus crater brought material into an observable plume. Instruments studied that ejecta, providing an independent line of evidence for water-bearing material. The experiment probes material that passive surface viewing may miss, but it samples a particular target and event. Water in the observed plume, the amount of excavated material and the fraction entering an instrument’s field of view require separate estimates. Consequently, do not combine the LCROSS result and the sunlit Clavius concentration into one universal percentage. Both concern water, yet the physical settings and sampling mechanisms differ. Comparing methods is valuable precisely because their limitations are different rather than interchangeable.

From concentration to mass: keep the units
NASA’s SOFIA account reports roughly 100–412 parts per million for the region studied, not a whole-Moon average. A mass concentration in ppm is a fraction of one million. For a hypothetical one-kilogram sample at 300 ppm, the corresponding water mass is 0.0003 kilograms, or 0.3 grams. The calculator teaches this conversion; it is neither a drilling result nor a recovery simulation. Doubling sample mass doubles calculated water only while concentration remains fixed. A real investigation must additionally test variations with depth, grain properties and sampling method. Correct arithmetic cannot make an unrepresentative sample representative, and a calculated inventory is different from an achievable extraction yield.

Do not jump from detection to extraction
Mission planning requires more than detecting water: it asks how much can be separated with specified energy and equipment. Molecules retained by grains or protected within different components may respond differently to heating and processing. This dossier therefore declares neither a commercial reserve nor economic recoverability. Build a source table first: region, date, instrument, wavelength, estimation method and stated error interval. Then ask which new observation could distinguish competing explanations. Recording uncertainty does not reject a result. It identifies what a next experiment must resolve, helps prevent incompatible estimates being averaged together and makes an investigation more useful to another researcher who needs to check its assumptions.

Build a research plan you can check
Begin with a small, testable comparison: what measurement does the word water describe in each paper? Summarise sources in your own words and check reuse terms before republishing original figures. If you download a data table, retain its version, column definitions and access date. Never overlay this page’s teaching calculation and present it as an observed curve. Put your expected result into the research note before inspecting the evidence; if the evidence disagrees, report that disagreement. As a next step, find a primary study of how lunar water is retained and compare its method with these observations. A useful outcome is a documented question and a reproducible comparison, not an unsupported resource estimate.

SOFIA observations near six micrometres support molecular water in the studied sunlit region; the result is location dependent.

A next research step
At an assumed 300 ppm, how many grams of water correspond to a 2 kg sample? Why is this not a recoverable-water estimate?
Open an example reasoning path
2 × 300 / 1000 = 0.6 g. This gives hypothetical total water in the sample; accessibility, separation efficiency, energy and representativeness require additional evidence.
Model: mass-based ppm, a homogeneous sample and constant concentration. The curve is a calculated teaching relation, not an observation, reserve or yield estimate.
