SPACETRC / CONNECTED SCIENCE
One question. Many disciplines.
Follow a space question through physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, Earth science, materials and robotics. Choose a field, then turn its question into a small investigation.
Forces, motion and energy
Begin a motion problem by defining the system: the vehicle, its surroundings and their interactions. Mass and weight describe different quantities. Checking dimensions can expose a faulty model even when its numerical output looks plausible.
How does the weight of the same mass change with gravity? Which variable would you keep fixed?
Matter leaves clues in light
Atoms and molecules interact with light at characteristic wavelengths. Interpreting a spectrum means considering the signal, instrument effects and alternative explanations together. One feature does not reveal the complete composition of an atmosphere.
Could two explanations produce a similar spectral feature? What second measurement would distinguish them?
Make the question of life testable
Astrobiology investigates the origin, evolution and possibility of life in the universe. An environment being habitable does not mean life has been detected there. A candidate biosignature must also be examined against non-biological processes.
Which independent lines of evidence would make a claim of life more convincing?
From one number to an interval
Read a measurement together with its unit and uncertainty. A missing value is not zero. Changing a plot axis changes its appearance, not the underlying measurement. Test an interpretation by reading the same data in both a table and a graph.
Does the difference between two results remain meaningful once uncertainty is considered? What extra information do you need?
Read our planet as a system
Air, oceans, ice and land form a connected system. Check date, location, wavelength and resolution when interpreting a satellite observation. A difference between two images taken under different conditions does not by itself establish a long-term trend.
How would you account for season, clouds and instrument changes when comparing two dates?
Judge a material against its mission
Strength is only one consideration for a space structure. Mass, thermal cycling, damage, manufacturability and verification must be considered together. Selecting a material includes testing how it behaves in a defined environment under a defined load.
What might you trade for a lighter component? Which experiment would test that decision?
Sense, decide, measure again
A robot estimates its surroundings using sensors, selects an action towards a goal and measures the result. Sensing errors and communication delay can affect decisions. Defining the limits of autonomy matters as much as demonstrating its capabilities.
Should a robot stop or replan when it encounters an unexpected obstacle? Which information does it need?
Build your evidence card
- Write one testable question and a prediction.
- Identify the changed variable, fixed conditions and measured outcome.
- Record units, source, date and the limits of the method.
- Compare the evidence with the prediction; revise the explanation.
